Azerbaijan is pursuing a transition toward clean power generation to diversify its broader energy profile. As one of the world's earliest crude exporters with production dating back to the mid-19th century, the country continues to operate as a major global supplier of hydrocarbons.

Domestic energy consumption in the nation remains concentrated almost entirely in fossil fuels. According to 2023 figures, natural gas provided 67 percent of Azerbaijan's total energy supply, while crude oil and petroleum products made up 31.1 percent.

The initiative to incorporate more renewable capacity follows Azerbaijan's role as the host of the COP29 UN Climate Change Conference in 2024. Despite ongoing dependence on petroleum and natural gas for economic revenue and internal demand, the state is seeking to expand non-fossil sources within its power generation matrix.
