The European Commission has published a draft implementing regulation establishing standardised reporting templates for methane emissions in the upstream energy sector. Industry stakeholders have been invited to review the draft and submit their feedback before the 6 November deadline.

The reporting framework stems from Methane Regulation (EU) 2024/1787. This legislation introduces strict standards for the accurate measurement, quantification, monitoring, reporting, and verification of methane output across the energy industry.

The compliance rules cover a wide range of upstream and midstream oil and gas activities, including exploration, extraction, gathering, processing, transmission, distribution, and underground storage. The requirements also apply to liquefied natural gas facilities and coal mining operations.
