US-Canada Natural Gas and Electricity Trade Value Rose in 2025
Cross-border trade value for natural gas and electricity increased in 2025 despite an 11% downturn in overall energy commerce between the United States and Canada.

Total energy trade between the United States and Canada contracted by 11% in 2025, falling to an estimated $137 billion. The overall valuation figures were compiled from U.S. Census Bureau trade data.
Despite the broader decline in bilateral energy flows, the combined trade value for natural gas and electricity experienced a slight increase over the same period. This sector-specific growth moved counter to the wider bilateral trend.
The growth in trade value was primarily supported by an increase in natural gas prices. Higher cross-border trade volumes for natural gas also contributed to the overall gain during the year.
