Seaborne coal shipments departing from the United States rose 37% week over week to reach 2.10 million metric tons in the week ended August 23. The figures were published in data released on August 25 by S&P Global Commodities at Sea.

A significant increase in thermal coal movements underpinned the total expansion. Outbound thermal coal shipments surged 104% from the prior week to reach 1.08 million metric tons, with India driving the surge in demand.

Shipments of metallurgical coal also experienced modest growth during the same seven-day period. Metallurgical coal exports gained 2% week over week, totaling 1.03 million metric tons.
