RINA Introduces Mermaid Propulsion Design to Cut Vessel Fuel Use and Emissions

Classification society RINA has launched a propulsion concept called Mermaid, engineered to cut vessel emissions and reduce reliance on auxiliary engines.

Classification society RINA has introduced a forward-looking propulsion architecture branded as Mermaid. The design aims to support vessel owners in lowering bunker consumption, trimming emissions, bolstering operational resilience, and safeguarding asset value over time.

Announced in a statement on 27 August, the concept broadens the functionality of a ship two-stroke main engine beyond standard propulsion duties. Under the design, the main engine serves as the primary supplier of onboard electrical power, decreasing the operational burden on less efficient auxiliary engines.

The Mermaid configuration integrates battery energy storage alongside a shaft generator and a propeller shaft clutch to improve overall operating efficiency.
