Indian Coal Power Plants Face Critical Fuel Supply Shortages

Up to 45 coal-fired electricity plants across India are operating with critical fuel shortages. The depleted inventories stem from a surge in power consumption during strong El Nino conditions, combined with delivery bottlenecks caused by seasonal monsoon rains.
Data from the Central Electricity Authority indicates that the affected facilities are holding coal reserves below a quarter of mandated standard levels. For these generation units, existing on-site fuel is insufficient to maintain operations for three consecutive days.
The tightening fuel availability illustrates the ongoing supply chain and generation pressures facing the domestic energy network during periods of high power demand and severe weather disruptions.
