A Malta Trading House Goes East: Alkagesta and Singapore
Founded in Malta in 2018, Alkagesta opened its Singapore hub in 2025 to test whether a European governance model could travel to Asia.

Alkagesta was founded in Malta in 2018, and for seven years its identity was European: EU governance, Mediterranean logistics, a banking network built across the continent. The Singapore hub opened in 2025 tested whether that identity could travel.
The company argued it could, because Singapore shared the same regulatory instincts. Fintech News Singapore reported that the legal framework was comparable to European standards, and board member Pierre Gay called it "the ideal environment for disciplined commodity trading."
The operating model moved unchanged. Alkagesta Asia Pte Ltd ran letters of credit, insurance and credit protection through 28 international banks, with KYC/AML checks, vessel and counterparty screening and zero tolerance on sanctions. IPS News described the expansion as extending the core principles of governance and structure rather than adapting them.
ScandAsia summarised the ambition through CEO Orkhan Rustamov: merging the precision of EU governance with Asian growth momentum. The company also carried ISCC EU certification for biofuel supply chains into the region.
The market responded. Ship & Bunker reported 180,000 MT of marine fuel supplied in December 2025 against a 250,000 MT monthly target. The team documented its presence in Alkagesta at Horizon Terminal Singapore, Jurong Island and published Singapore Marine Fuels 2026: Supply Resilience. The announcement remains at Alkagesta Expands Singapore Commodity Trading Hub.
