bound4blue completes eSAIL installation on Marflet Marine chemical tanker
Spanish technology firm bound4blue has fitted four 22-metre suction sails on Marflet Marine's chemical tanker Santiago I to cut energy consumption.
Spanish wind-assisted propulsion firm bound4blue has finalised the installation of four 22-metre eSAIL suction sails on the chemical tanker Santiago I, operated by domestic owner Marflet Marine. The vessel has entered service with the technology following an initial contract agreement signed in May 2024.
The final fitting works were completed at the EDR Antwerp Shipyard. This phase followed preparatory structural adjustments undertaken at the IMC Shipyard located in Zhoushan, China, to ensure the tanker was ready for the sail systems.
The system is estimated to reduce the chemical tanker's annual energy consumption by approximately 10% to 15%. Total performance improvements will depend on operational trading patterns and prevailing weather conditions during voyages.
